The major variables you should consider when shopping for a new dishwasher are the quietness of a dishwasher, along with cycles, racks, and overall capacity.
Most importantly, you should look at reliability.
This article is all about reliability within the first year and the most reliable/unreliable brands of dishwashers. First, let's look at how we measured reliability for every brand.
Boston Showroom Dishwasher Display
Every year, I publish an article about the most and least reliable brands. It's important to differentiate by product and not just brand.
For instance, refrigerators as a category, are almost three times more likely to need service than a dishwasher.
For a more accurate measure, we now publish multiple reliability articles based on different appliances.
How do we Measure Reliability?
Reliability is a simple measurement. We have 25 service techs performing 8-10 service calls Monday through Friday with 11 working on Saturday.
In 2017, we had 30,761 service calls.
The formula is straightforward with sales written divided by service calls over one year. We do not include phone education calls or damage.
However, if we have to send a service van to your house after troubleshooting over the phone, it counts as a service call. We do not distinguish between major and minor problems.
We provide free warranty service for the first year. This is the best indication for initial product quality.
Let’s look at the most and least reliable dishwashers.
We delivered 8,739 and serviced 868 dishwashers from January 20, 2017 to January 20, 2018.
The average service rate is about 9.93% in the first year for all dishwashers and about 12.92% on all appliances combined.
I have included last year's and 2015's numbers to see any possible trends.
Most Reliable/ Least reliable Dishwashers:
Fisher Paykel: 2017-2018 148 Sold/ 42 Serviced 30.48%
- 2016-2017 131 sold/33 serviced 25.19%
- 100 sold/16 serviced 16%
They were at 40% at one time. Now they have taken a step back from the last few years. Part of their issues is the product is so unique. There is more of a percent of a user error.
Jenn-Air: 2017-2018 575 Sold/175 Serviced 17.75%
We separated Jenn-Air from KitchenAid for the first time this year even though they are the same dishwasher.
Blomberg: 57 Sold/10 Serviced 17.54%
Good features with a stainless tank dishwasher, reliability is not the same as a Bosch, KitchenAid or Miele.
Frigidaire Gallery: 196 Sold/32 Serviced 16.33%
The more complicated Frigidaire units under the Gallery name requires more service than Frigidaire's more basic line, which has a lower service rate.
Thermador: 2017-2018 954 Sold/ 154 Serviced 13%
- 2016-2017 875 sold/107 serviced 12.23%
- 2015-2016 609 sold /104 serviced 17%
Thermador, owned and manufactured by the BSH Corporation (the same as Bosch), is very similar to a Bosch dishwasher.
Asko: 2017-2018 128 Sold 20 serviced 12.2%
- 2016-2017 100 Sold/20 serviced 20%.
- 2015-2016 74 sold/16 serviced 25%
Asko is going in the right direction cutting their service rate in half, but they should be under 10% to command a premium price.
Bosch: 2017-2018 2622 Sold/ 273 Serviced 10.41%
- 2016-2017 2964 sold/ 286 sold 9.65%
- 2015-2016 3671 sold/257 serviced 9.62%
For value in a dishwasher, Bosch may be the best product sold. Add the Bosch Benchmark (Bosch's highest product line) and Thermador numbers, they would be under 9%.
Frigidaire Pro: 59 Sold/ 6 Serviced 10.41%
The Frigidaire Pro, like Gallery, requires more service than Frigidaire's basic line. 10.41% is pretty much the average for all dishwashers.
KitchenAid: 766 Sold/73 Serviced 9.53%
KitchenAid and Jenn-Air are technically the same brand, but I always wondered how the same dishwasher can have a far higher rate with another label.
Samsung: 2017-2018 285 Sold/24 Serviced 8.42%
- 2016-2017 Samsung 140 sold/ 9 serviced 6.5%
- 2015-2016 60 sold/1 serviced 1.67%
Pretty impressive still as we are selling more of their higher-priced dishwashers.
Miele: 2017-2018 1126 Sold/67 Serviced 5.95%
- 2016-2017 871 sold/78 serviced 7.8%
- 201-2016 683 Sold/ 50 Serviced 7.32%
5.95% is an unbelievably low number of a product averaging over $1,100. Then again this is the best dishwasher manufactured.
Frigidaire: 2017-2018 508 Sold/ 29 Serviced 5.71%
- 2016-2017 1162 sold/78 serviced 6.54%
- 2015-2016 1100 sold/54 serviced 4.9%
The Frigidaire brand has very basic dishwashers with simple controls and mechanics…then again, they do work.
Amana: 72 Sold/4 Serviced 5.56%
Amana is another basic dishwasher, like Whirlpool, with less features and simple controls.
Bosch Benchmark: 2016-2017 15 Serviced 287 Sold 5.23%
- 2016-2017 164 sold/ 31 serviced 18.9%
- 2015-2016 56 sold/ 85 Serviced 23.88%
Bosch Benchmark is the highest product line of Bosch dishwashers. 5.23% is impressive given all their features.
Whirlpool: 2017-2018 779 Sold/11 Serviced 1.41%
- 2016-2017 525 sold/ 20 serviced 3.81%
- 2015-2016 647 sold/12 serviced 1.85%
Whirlpool is sold primarily to large construction jobs so it is hard to know when people move in and actually use the appliance. Regardless, 1.41% is still amazing.
The corollary to service issues is the parts turnaround. You call us with a problem. We then diagnose the problem, order the parts, and then send a technician to repair the dishwasher.
It should be a 1-2-day turnaround maximum. The Whirlpool companies (Jenn-Air, Kitchen-Aid, Maytag) and Bosch have excellent parts availability.
You should also be concerned with the service experience. Most manufacturers have extended service and only 5% of the retailers have a service department with more than one or two technicians.
It is paramount for you to locate a reputable service agent before buying any appliance. You will statistically need one when buying a whole kitchen of appliances.
