Jenn-Air vs. Miele 30 Inch Professional Ranges (Reviews/Ratings/Prices)

November 18th, 2014 | 2 min. read

By Steve Sheinkopf

Jenn-Air and Miele could not be more different from every aspect. The company, products and philosophy is totally different. The ranges even look different with Jenn-Air being more traditional and Miele being really contemporary.

Let's look at both companies and their products...

Miele

Miele is a German manufacturer of high quality domestic appliances and machines for commercial applications. The company was founded over 110 years ago in 1899 by Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann and is the largest family owned appliance manufacturer in the world.

Their hallmark has been reliability through absolutely rigid quality control and obsessive manufacturing discipline. For example, Miele actually manufactures 96% of the parts for their dishwasher. As a result,  Miele is the least serviced appliance in the industry.

Jenn Air

Jenn-Air is part of the Whirlpool Corporation (along with KitchenAid, Maytag, Whirlpool and Amana), the largest household appliance manufacturer in the world. After years of languishing, Whirlpool spent 300 million dollars on Jenn-Air, specifically on wall ovens and professional ranges.

This range is one of the best selling in the industry, because it has great features at a competitive price with a very good promotion.

Which is Better?

I do not think one is necessarily better. They both have very different attributes, but let's directly compare.

Cooktop/Oven

Both are really powerful. I am surprised how powerful Miele actually is with 3 19,000 BTU burners. Jenn-Air has a 20,000 BTU and 2 15,000. Both also feature twin convection for evenness of cooking.

Controls

Miele has basic controls on their all gas ranges. Their dual fuel has better M tough controls with 21 different cycles. Jenn-Air has really excellent controls complete with pictures of finished foods.

The Real Difference

Jenn-Air like other American companies post recession has relied on promotions to sell even really marquee products. You receive a really good dishwasher for free with purchase of this range. Miele on the other hand is a German company. German companies like Gaggenau and Liebherr rely on quality of manufacture. They never offer rebates.

So this comparison after a free dishwasher is about a $2,000 difference or almost a 40% increase versus the Miele.

Reliability

The average appliance will need service 15-25% within the first year. Miele is less than 3%. Jenn-Air is about average. However, ranges are a new category for Miele, and we will see how that translates. They have never manufactured a pro range in their celebrated history.

Still both of these are good, but very different choices.
