The kitchen is one of the rooms in your house requiring the most light. Lighting in the kitchen will help with prep and cooking processes, and layered lighting with accent, ambient and decorative elements is your best bet to illuminate your space.

Track vs. Recessed

Recessed is popular because it is hidden from view. Track is adaptable and can be used in many more applications than recessed lighting. We use it in our appliance displays for that reason. However, track is also more imaginative than recessed, because you can really add different elements in any color shape or form.

So if you want a fire engine red pendants and matching heads, you can do that with track lighting. Recessed as I said will be hidden. Let's look at some applications.

Sloped Ceilings

In the kitchen below, the homeowner has sloped ceilings. Sloped ceilings can be difficult to light, especially in a kitchen. They have have opted for suspended  track to provide more light over the island work areas.

Limited Electrical

We typically recommended layering recessed lighting, under-cabinet lighting, and pendants to make sure all areas of the kitchen are well-lit. But, if you are short on space or can only have one fixture, track lighting with its multiple heads is a great option

In the next kitchen, you will see that the lighting plan includes track, pendants, and under-cabinet lighting, in addition to the great amount of natural light. The two curved tracks help to provide light in the work areas next to the sink and stove.

Flexible Monorail vs. Regular Track

In the past, there have been rigid track systems. Rigid track will only provide lighting in the center of the kitchen. Flexible track, or monorail, will allow for greater customization and therefore, more light directed in the areas where you need it most.

Track lighting is now available in multiple styles and sizes, and most companies allow for the track itself to be bent. Some systems will even allow for the combination of track heads and pendants, so you can have task lighting(heads) with some decorative lighting(pendants) too.

In the last kitchen, the track serves two purposes: the track on the right hand side of the picture provides task lighting, where the track on the left is pendants, which provide decorative lighting over the seating area.

Key Takeaways

  • Track is your best option for smaller spaces or limited electrical outlets
  • However, you have unlimited creativity with track unlike recessed
  • You can hang and suspend different heads and pendants to totally customize your space
