This article will address the most powerful free standing gas ranges in the appliance industry. The power of gas ranges is measured in British thermal units, more commonly referred to as BTUs. This unit measures the amount of heat for the surface burners.

Ten years ago, the average burner power was 10,000 to 12,000 BTUs on the high end, but now they are far stronger. You do not need a professional range for high output burners anymore.

Slide-In vs. Freestanding

This is a frequently asked question. Slide-ins have the controls on the front. They also sit on top of the countertops to eliminate seams, so liquid, grease and food cannot drip between the range and the cabinet. Freestanding is less pricey for the similar features.

Which Would I Buy?

Since the total power and power burner output do not vary drastically between ranges my decision comes down to features, price point, and service reliability. I would most likely consider the Electrolux, KitchenAid and Frigidaire ranges. These three brands typically promote good package deals and they produce reliable products in all categories.

Although the GE and Samsung ranges have slightly greater power, they would not be my first choice. At Yale, we promote brands with the best service relationships. If there is an issue, we want quick turnaround of parts along with technical support. This is unique in the industry, but we have 19 technicians fixing products 6 days a week. It is crucial to us. Although GE and Samsung manufacture great products they have not prioritized servicing products as quickly and conveniently as other brands.

I like the Electrolux range because it offers many high-end features and user-friendly settings such as the telescopic glide racks and the convection conversion feature. As someone who grew up in the technology age I really like technological features such as proof, dehydrate and the Perfect Turkey button.

KitchenAid typically runs great promotions as well. I like the KitchenAid range because it comes at a lower price than many of the other models and has many of the same features such as convection, a warming drawer, and one of the largest capacity ovens.

If I were to start a family I would definitely consider the Frigidaire range. Frigidaire produces reliable products at an affordable price point. It has the central griddle burner which is great for making pancakes and grilled cheese. It has a warming drawer which is convenient for busy families. Many Frigidaire products also come with a smudge-proof stainless steel so you can achieve the stainless look without having to clean fingerprints off the appliances.
