What do you think of when you hear the word "compact"? A car, a makeup case? When I hear the word compact, I immediately think of laundry.

Compact laundry refers to 24 inch washers and dryers. This size is convenient for stacking in closets or placing side by side in a standard 24 inch kitchen cabinet. Almost all compact laundry is built and/or engineered in Europe.

You know what’s not fun? Going to the laundromat. Quite often in a city condo, apartment or brownstones style buildings, space is at a premium, and there just isn’t enough room for full size laundry. As washers and dryers keep getting bigger and bigger every year, there remains the option of compact laundry.

Compact washers and dryers are very popular in the Boston market and many other urban areas worldwide. If your current laundry space is smaller than 27’’ wide, 33’’ deep, and 36’’ tall you need to look at compact laundry.

The quality of the machines are excellent, although they have less capacity and are more expensive.

Compact laundry has become much more popular for a variety of reasons.

More people have been moving to the city, where there are size restrictions and smaller spaces to accommodate laundry machines.

Compact laundry is defined as being able to fit in a closet or under a kitchen counter. Dimensions vary slightly, but are typically 35” tall, 24” wide and 24” in depth.

This type of laundry is becoming more popular, because you do not have to cut a hole in new construction. Ventless laundry can also be placed anywhere with power and water as well, so it can easily be relocated to an upstairs closet from the basement.

Heat pump dryers are newest trend in laundry. LG and Whirlpool are actively marketing a full size unit. Blomberg just introduced their compact dryer last week in New York at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show (read more here). 

After looking at heat pump technology for 6 months, It is a product you should consider. For builders, it should almost be the number one choice.
