When I started in 1986, that was easy. You bought a KitchenAid, built by Hobart, a commercial dishwasher company. Whirlpool bought KitchenAid that same year.
Now it is not so easy. You can spend $730 or more than $5,600, and you can even buy a commercial dishwasher designed for your home.
This list is built on the 33,190 service calls we ran last year, not on spec sheets. We sell and service every brand here with our own 35 technicians across Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. We also load real dirty dishes into these machines, with no pre-rinsing.

The Best Dishwashers for 2027
Bosch 800 Series SHX78CM5N: Best for Drying Plastic
The SHX78CM5N runs at 42 dB and holds 16 place settings. It lists at about $1,550 and is often promoted closer to $1,400.
CrystalDry Plastic Drying
CrystalDry uses zeolite, a mineral that absorbs moisture and releases heat up to 176°F. In our tests it dried plastic better than anything else we ran.
If your top rack is full of Tupperware and water bottles, this is the feature you are paying for. One tip: CrystalDry is an option you select, so make sure it is turned on.
PowerControl Zone Washing
PowerControl lets you boost spray pressure in four zones through the Home Connect app. In theory, you can wash your grandmother's china and a lasagna pan in the same load.
Just make sure you pick the right quadrants. The buttons on the door only give you front and back, so the four-zone version lives in the app.
Racks and Leak Protection
The flexible third rack holds utensils and small bowls. The middle rack adjusts to three heights and nine positions with RackMatic.
AquaStop protects your floor around the clock, with a leak sensor that shuts the water off. That matters most in a kitchen above a finished room.

Miele G 7186 SCVi SFP: Best for Cleaning and Racks
The G 7186 SCVi SFP is the stainless version, at about $2,400. A panel-ready version, the G 7186 SCVi, is about $2,200. Both run at 42 dB.
AutoDos Automatic Detergent
AutoDos doses detergent for you from a PowerDisk cartridge that lasts about 20 washes. A pod dumps all its detergent into the wash at once.
On the Automatic program, a sensor reads how dirty the load is and adjusts the dose. On every other program, it doses to the program you choose.
Clients report the cleanest dishes with AutoDos. And you can still use pods in the regular dispenser.
3D MultiFlex Third Rack
The top rack adjusts left, right, up, and down. It fits stemware, metal straws, and utensils that fall through other racks.
This one would be perfect for me. My daughter drinks her Poppi soda exclusively through metal straws, and right now I have to lay them flat on the rack.
Cleaning and QuickIntenseWash
The G 7186 has three full spray arms and a 58-minute QuickIntenseWash. It came closest of any machine to cleaning burned-on egg in our no-rinse tests.
None fully cleaned it, and every machine left some baked-on lasagna behind. If a dishwasher company tells you otherwise, ask to see the pan.
Drying, Water Softener, and Warranty
AutoOpen drying pops the door open at the end of the cycle so steam can escape. A built-in water softener protects the machine and your glasses in hard water.
The G 7186 carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty, twice the one-year term most brands offer.

KitchenAid KDFS324SPS: Best Value
At 41 dB, it is one of the quietest dishwashers we sell under $900. It holds 15 place settings and has a third rack with its own jets.
The cycles are simple, and most of the time you will use the basics anyway. The ProWash sensor adjusts time and water to how dirty your dishes are.
Self-Clearing Filter and Drying
The triple filtration system clears itself, so there is no filter to pull out and scrub. ProDry uses a heater, and the door opens a few inches at the end to let steam out.

KitchenAid KDFS424SPS: Most Room Under $1,000
The KDFS424 is about $900. It holds 16 place settings in a larger tub and uses more than 50 jets across four wash arms.
The third rack has its own rotating jets, and the middle and third racks ride on smooth-gliding rails. ProDry handles drying.
It is louder than the KDFS324 at 44 dB. That still meets the quiet standard.

GE Profile PDP755SYVFS: Least Maintenance
Every once in a while, I have to clean the filter on my Miele. Skip it and you get odors, and that is true of any dishwasher with a filter.
The GE Profile has a Piranha disposer, a stainless steel shredder that grinds food. It still has a removable filter, but far less food ever reaches it.
Even with the disposer, it runs at 42 dB, under the quiet standard. It also has bottle jets, silverware jets, a steam prewash option, and Active Flood Protect.
GE Service Network
Its service rate is a bit higher than the norm at 10.3%. GE runs its own national service department, and that offsets it.
If you are buying from a dealer without its own service, the GE Profile is a good fallback. We service everything we sell ourselves, so for our clients it is a question of features.

LG LDNPH753S: Best for Steam
Five years ago, I sold an earlier LG steam dishwasher to my neighbor. Just to see how steam would do in a dishwasher, I baked macaroni and cheese onto a dish on purpose and brought it over.
I have to admit, it came out pretty much clean.
TrueSteam, QuadWash Pro, and Drying
Steam is also used in the final rinse to prevent spots on your glasses. QuadWash Pro uses four rotating spray arms.
Dynamic Heat Dry combines heat and steam, and AutoVent Dry opens the door at the end to release moisture. It runs at 42 dB and holds 16 place settings.
Warranty and Reliability
LG backs the motor for 10 years and the control board, racks, and tub for 2 years. The rack problem behind LG's 11.6% rate was on the discontinued LDPH7972, not this model.
We do not have first-year service data on the LDNPH753S yet, so we do not quote a rate for it.

Bosch 100 Series SHE41CM5N: Lowest Price
We did not recommend this dishwasher until a few months ago, because it had a plastic bottom and no leak protection.
Now Bosch has upgraded the SHE41CM5N to a regular Bosch, with an all-stainless tub and the AquaStop leak protection package. It uses the same core Bosch wash system as the higher series.
The racks are still a bit shallow. At $730, it is a good buy.
Bosch's 7.8% rate covers the whole Bosch line. The upgraded 100 is too new for its own data.

Bosch Benchmark SHX9PCM5N: Quietest Bosch
The Benchmark is Bosch's quietest dishwasher. It is often promoted to about $1,800.
What the Extra Money Buys
The roughly $450 over the 800 buys ball-bearing racks on all three levels and a built-in water softener. TimeLight also projects the time left onto your floor.
Bosch Benchmark's 2025 service rate is 7.7%, effectively the same as Bosch at 7.8%. The price difference buys features, not reliability.
Our recommendation is the Bosch 800 unless you live in a town with hard water. In Boston on MWRA water, you already have soft water, and you do not need to pay for the softener.

Miele G 7986 SCVi K2O: Quietest Overall
Knock2Open means you knock twice and the door opens by itself. A motorized close finishes the job on the way back.
It also has a color touch display, interior lighting, and a basket made to clean straws. It carries the same 2-year warranty as the G 7186.
However, the G 7186 has the same wash system and AutoDos. The panel-ready G 7186 SCVi is about $2,200, so you are paying about $1,900 more for the controls, the lighting, a few decibels, and Knock2Open.
Like the G 7186 SCVi, the G 7986 needs a cabinet panel and handle.

Asko DBI563IXXLS: Best Build Quality
Early in my career, the first quiet dishwashers with stainless steel interiors I sold were Askos, not Bosch. Today Askos are made in Slovenia.
Built Mostly From Steel
Its "8 Steel" design makes eight parts out of stainless steel. That includes the tub, racks, spray arms, filters, base, feet, and inner door.
Asko says the machine is tested to the equivalent of 20 years of use. That is a lab claim, not our data.
Capacity and Racks
It holds 14 place settings with a three-level rack. The tall tub fits plates up to 15¾ inches in the lower rack, and it runs at 42 dB.
It carries a 2-year parts and labor warranty. The filter clears itself.
The current Askos are built a lot like the originals. Until we have a year of service data, that build quality is the whole case for it.

Fisher & Paykel DD24DAX9 N DishDrawer: Best for Bending Less
Now that I am solidly in middle age, I see the point of the DishDrawer. You do not have to bend like you do with every other dishwasher.
But the drawers are shallower, and you do not get the features of the other dishwashers in this article.
Two Drawers, Two Cycles
The double DD24DAX9 N is about $1,900. Each drawer runs its own program, so you can wash a small load in one or two different loads at once.
It holds 14 place settings across both drawers, runs at 45 dB, and carries a 2-year parts and labor warranty.
Capacity and Reliability
Large pots, sheet pans, and oversized plates will not fit well, so bring yours to a showroom and test them.
Fisher & Paykel runs a 16.6% service rate, well above the 8.8% average. Two wash systems in one appliance means twice the parts that can need service.

Miele Professional PFD 104 SCVi XXL: Best for Heavy Daily Use
Miele makes a number of commercial dishwashers, and a few were designed for the home. For a home, the PFD 104 makes the most sense. It is panel-ready, and we service the line.
Final Rinse Temperature
The final rinse reaches up to 180°F, and you can adjust it. Residential sanitize cycles typically run about 150°F to 160°F.
It is commercial grade, but it is not NSF certified for restaurants.
Cycle Time
With 130°F hot water on a 208 to 220 volt circuit, the PFD 104 washes a full load in 24 minutes. On a standard 110 volt circuit with the same 130°F water, the cycle takes 52 minutes.
Installation and Warranty
The 24-minute cycle needs a 208 to 220 volt circuit, which most kitchens do not have for a dishwasher. Budget for an electrician if you want that speed, plus a cabinet panel and handle either way.
Miele is running a free 5-year warranty on its professional dishwashers through the end of 2026. Otherwise it carries Miele's 2-year warranty.
Noise
You give up quiet. Miele measures this machine differently from its home dishwashers, so its noise rating cannot be compared directly.
It is the loudest Miele we sell in a real kitchen.

Which Dishwasher Brands Are Most Reliable in 2027?
These are our own numbers, measured by brand. We take each brand's service calls in the first year and divide them by the number of dishwashers we sold.
These are new dishwashers in their first year under warranty. The data covers over 7,000 dishwashers, with at least 150 per brand before we publish a rate.
The dishwasher average of 8.8% sits a little above the 8.3% average across every appliance we sell. Dishwashers combine water, heat, and moving racks, so they come back slightly more often than the average appliance. Our most reliable dishwashers article goes deeper on the brand data.
The LG Asterisk
Take out one rack part and LG would likely have had one of the lowest service rates of any dishwasher brand we sell. Most of LG's calls traced to the top rack roller on last year's LDPH7972, now discontinued.
The motors, pumps, and heaters held up. Without that model, LG ran at roughly 4%. We do not have first-year data on its replacement, the LDNPH753S, yet.
The Gaps Are Smaller Than the Prices
Miele, Bosch, and KitchenAid finished within about three points of each other. Price gaps between them run more than $1,500.
You are paying Miele prices mostly for the racks and the wash, which we cover below.
First-year rates are only half the story, because a well-made dishwasher keeps going. One of our clients put it this way after retiring one: "After 14 years we put our dishwasher to rest but it served us well, we were told the average life is 8-10 years, the poor girl was washed up."
Is Miele Worth the Extra Money Over Bosch?
The Miele costs about $850 more than the Bosch 800 at list price, and closer to $1,000 when the Bosch is on sale. Miele's service rate is 2.2 points lower.

The Miele G 7986 and the Bosch Benchmark cost more. You get most of the same cycles and the same wash.

Which Dishwasher Dries Plastic Best?
If your plastic comes out wet today, buy a Bosch 800 or Benchmark. Plastic does not hold heat, so it cannot dry by condensation the way glass and ceramic can.
Two tips help any dishwasher. Use rinse aid, and do not pre-rinse your dishes. Enzyme detergents need food to work on.

What Is the Best Panel-Ready Dishwasher?
A panel-ready dishwasher takes a cabinet front, so you want one that sits flush with your cabinetry. Until recently, only the European dishwashers did.
Bosch Panel-Ready Dishwashers
Bosch panel-ready models start at about $1,200 with the 300 Series SHV53CM3N. The 800 Series SHV78CM3N adds CrystalDry at about $1,550, and the Benchmark tops the line.
Miele Panel-Ready Dishwashers
Miele panel-ready models run from about $2,100 for the G 5266 SCVi to about $4,100 for the G 7986. The G 7186 SCVi adds AutoDos and the 3D MultiFlex rack.
KitchenAid Panel-Ready Dishwashers
KitchenAid finally has a dishwasher that does not stick out past your cabinets. It is only one model, at about $1,800.

What Dishwasher Do You Need for Hard Water in Massachusetts?
Boston and most MWRA towns get soft water, roughly 10 to 20 mg/L. Most of Massachusetts is soft too, with a statewide median of about 47 mg/L.
These Massachusetts towns report hard or very hard water, above 120 mg/L. That includes Hanover, home of one of our showrooms.
Source: utility-reported data compiled by TapWaterData, checked October 2026. Harvard's figure covers the town water system, which serves about one in five residents.
If you are on a private well, test your water, because town numbers do not cover wells. Use only dishwasher salt, because table salt damages the machine.
The Bosch 800 does not have a built-in softener. That is the main reason to step up to the Benchmark.
How Do You Choose the Right Dishwasher?
1. Pick the One Problem That Bothers You Most
Wet plastic points to Bosch. Dirty dishes and awkward loads point to Miele. Noise points to anything at 44 dB or below.
2. Check Your Water Before You Check Features
If you are on a well or have hard water, a built-in softener is not optional. If you are on MWRA water, skip it.
3. Bring Your Own Pans and Stemware to the Showroom
Racks are the feature spec sheets describe worst. Load your real dishes before you buy, especially for a DishDrawer.
4. Ask Who Fixes It Before You Ask What It Costs
A lower service rate helps. A servicer in your town helps more.

How We Evaluated
We do not use a lab. We load baked-on lasagna, egg-coated plates, stained Tupperware, chocolate-covered sports bottles, and delicate glassware.
We do not pre-rinse, and we run only the Normal or Auto cycle. That is how you will use it.
