When I started at Yale full time in 1986, Jenn-Air was an upscale brand featuring cooking; especially slide-ins, wall ovens and cooktops. Jenn-Air was the first American company to offer convection.
Jenn-Air was acquired by Maytag in the 1990s, and the name Jenn-Air was extended to refrigerators and various other products. There was virtually zero investment into their core product until Maytag was bought under duress by Whirlpool.
Whirlpool invested 300 million in the Jenn-Air line with the emphasis on cooking. Their wall oven and professional cooking have excellent features and are competitive to the Viking segment of the market.
They have now refreshed the gas slide-in. Ironically, this is a popular, yet underserved niche. Let's see how they did.
New Jenn-Air Slide-In Gas Range
Slide-ins typically require some installation work unlike freestanding units. This new range, however, can be slid into a 30 inch space like a freestanding unit. 95% of the units sold are freestanding, so this is smart.
Output
The power and secondary burners top off at 19,000 and 15,000 BTUs. The Jenn-Air has a 56,000 BTU overall capacity, which is similar to a Viking or Wolf pro range.
Capacity
With the controls on the top, the new oven has been engineered to be large, really large. It is 5.9 cubic feet on the interior. The next closest is GE Café at 5.3 cu. ft. Most ovens are roughly 4-5 cubic feet. Viking is a 4.0 cubic oven.
Secondary Oven
Many people are buying professional ranges instead of gas slide-ins, because of free dishwasher promotions. The price of a pro with a free dishwasher is roughly the same as a slide-in with a dishwasher.
The new Jenn-Air offers a second oven below the main compartment. All professional ranges have just a blank space.
Thanks for reporting a problem. We'll attach technical data about this session to help us figure out the issue. Which of these best describes the problem?
I think this is a nice refresh. The range is extremely competitive with other brands. Hopefully Jenn-Air will continue their package rebates. We will look at reliability when the product is due to launch later this year.
