True Professional 42-Inch Built-In Refrigerator (Reviews / Ratings / Prices)

Written by Steve Sheinkopf | Apr 9, 2015 4:00:00 PM

If you went refrigerator shopping 30 years ago, you had two main choices for refrigerators either white or almond, then black became the prestige color.

Stainless changed all that in the early 1990's. Now stainless is the most common finish. It matches all different cabinets, looks good and is timeless.

The stainless phenomenon first started in commercial kitchens out of necessity, because it is non-porous and more hygienic than porcelain or texture metal. True currently dominates the commercial market and only very recently started manufacturing for the residential market

Let's look at the company and then the new refrigerator.

True

True is a prototypical family owned Midwestern manufacturing company. The original founder built a freezer and then went on the road selling it in the 1940's.

Their first big breaks were partnering with 7UP and later Coke with their chest style coolers for items like ice cream sandwiches. 70 plus years later, they are the barand name in commercial refrigeration.  Look in your convenience store or supermarket, and typically their refrigeration will be built by True.

Residential Products

We have been selling True for almost three years. They started with under counter refrigerators and beverage centers. The product is solid, so solid that it is UL approved to be placed outside. Then again, it is all stainless inside and out.

True 42-Inch Professional Built-In Refrigerator

Their 42" full size refrigerator has 24.44 cubic feet with 15.7 cubic feet of refrigeration and 8.74 cubic feet of freezer storage.  It is an unbelievably solid piece

Features

  • 3 adjustable removable door bins that can be customized in placement. The glass shelves in the refrigerator are encapsulated with stainless steel borders and are removable as well as adjustable.
  • Its base is equipped with 3 stainless steel drawer bins and 3 polished stainless steel wire baskets
  • All stainless steel parts of the refrigerator are 304 stainless and are antibacterial, hygienic, and easy to keep clean like their commercial product.
  • Control panel is built with an elegant LCD display, which also enhances access to the control.
  • A ramp-up lighting system shines evenly throughout the refrigerator, and all of its stainless steel surfaces.
  • 2 compressors (like Sub-Zero) to keep food 2 – 3 times longer than regular refrigerators by separating the moist air from the refrigerator and dry air of the freezer in different chambers.
  • It weighs an estimated 800 lbs and has a three year full warranty.
  • Other features include doors with a 120° stay-open door, accessible lift-up grill located at the top of the refrigerator, and dual compressors and evaporators. This provides proper temperature controls, air flow regulation, as well as the prevention of odors.

How Does True Compare with Sub-Zero?

I chose Sub-Zero, because their PRO48 is the only other commercial looking refrigerator on the market.  They really do not compete. The Pro48 is 48 inches with 30 cubic feet vs True at 42 inches and 24.4 cubic feet

. I like True a great deal, but it is a side by side in a French door world. Sub-Zero has an icemaker, whereas True does not. Sub-Zero is also the best brand (arguably) in the appliance world with their partner brand Wolf

Conclusion

Still, True will sell more than a few. It has a real commercial look, which is a trend these days. The reliability and quality of its components is also unrivalled. Chefs and culinary professionals will certainly consider True due to their commercial reputation.

About the icemaker: True maintains that icemakers are a repair issue inside a refrigerator. Icemakers should be sold as separate units like their commercial products. Half our refrigerator issues are icemaker problems, so perhaps they are right.
