Ah...The Cape. It has been a summer vacation destination for Bostonians almost since the Mayflower.

It has spawned its own informal lifestyle and lighting emulated in beachfront communities everywhere.

Cape Cod Style

The Cape Cod style home originated from New England in the 17th century. The houses were inspired by lighthouse architecture. Often symmetrical, one story with steep roofs, this simple design was due to withstand the harsh coastal climate.

Modern day Cape Cod style still draws inspiration from colonial design.

Cape Cod Style Lighting

Let's look at how you can incorporate this look to your home.

Pendants

Using copper onion lights can make you feel that you are in Cape Cod as the cooper onion has been a favorite for the capers in past decades in designing their indoor and outdoor lighting.

Currey and Company 'Bowline' One Light - $900

There are many styles of Island pendants that can feel nautical such as this Currey and Company “Bowline” pendant, the look of rope can make you feel like you are on a ship sailing the seven seas.

The use of accents such as old rope, driftwood and irons go hand in hand with traditional cape design.

Chandeliers

As pictured below the choice of using two chandeliers to acquire the adequate lighting and style desired in this white marble cape kitchen incorporates traditional with Shabby Chic.

The general lighting is provided by recessed lighting and under counter lights strategically place to provide general and task lighting.

It is important to layer your lighting to control scenes and functionality in the kitchen prep areas (read more about light layering here).
