Columns are increasingly becoming the application of choice. In custom kitchens, integrated appliances are the most desired option because they're totally out of sight. The integrated column differs from other freestanding counter-dept refrigerators, because the door does not protrude from the cabinet.
With its zero-clearance hinge, integrated columns provide a much more upscale look and design, allowing you to show off the materials, colors & design of your custom kitchen. Given the unique, integrated look, this type of application is not available with all manufacturers. Also, current energy standards for 2014, have recognized “Columns” as being the most efficient means of refrigeration. Columns are also available in an all-freezer configuration.
This specific market is limited to certain brands, like Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, Miele, Gaggenau and Viking. This article will focus and compare two of these manufacturers, Sub-Zero and Liebherr. Both of which are different in their own way.
The following will compare Refrigerator Columns from each respective manufacturer.
The Liebherr Group was established in 1949. Headquartered in Germany, Liebherr’s engineering excellence provides the widest range of freezers, refrigerators & wine cabinets in Europe. With innovative products, ideas, top quality, as well as advanced design, it makes them a leading brand & contender. They've been able to introduce a European flair to the American Market. Liebherr is recognized as one of the most energy efficient manufacturers of refrigeration. Besides appliances, they also manufacturer aerospace, earthmoving and mining equipment.

Sub-Zero has been producing refrigeration since 1945. They are produced in Arizona and they are a well recognized label in high-end residential refrigeration. For 60 years, Sub-Zero has offered innovative and technologically advanced refrigeration solutions. With the constant evolution of design, Sub-Zero has consistently executed to meet the needs of designers and will be doing so once again with its launching of the “New Generation” refrigeration line-up (late 2013/early 2014), that will offer 18”, 24”, 30” & 36” columns.

Between these two manufacturers, the preferred choice is Sub-Zero.
With due respect to Liebherr, they’re considered the value brand (less expensive) in this category of refrigeration. They’re German made, offer unique features and are visually appealing. Liebherr has two issues, however.
First, this is a true European product a 11.9 cubic feet, which is small by American standards. Europeans shop everyday for food and store less than Americans, so they typically have much smaller refrigerators.
Secondly, Liebherr has the most repairs in its class, which is baffling to us. German manufacturers like Miele and Gaggenau are usually the best. It's a tough repair as well.
Sub-Zero consistently produces a good product. At 16.7 cubic feet, Sub-Zero is more in line with expectations plus they have a better service record as well as package pricing.
