burned clothes dryer fireI was walking through the showroom and saw this a Blomberg washer and dryer. Blomberg is a decent company, but I do not typically like selling off-brands at Yale. We have to service products once they're sold. Off-brands and foreign labels can be maddening for parts and technical support.

Then again, I do not have much of a choice. The new UL dryer regulations state that a fire in a dryer must be contained for 7 hours. Most companies are scrambling to comply with the new standards. The biggest player, Bosch, will not market a vented dryer effective August 2013.

Dryer fires are a real problem in this country at just over 15,500 annually, causing 10 deaths, 310 injuries and $84.4 million in damages. The problem, however, is not the machine, but the venting. Cleaning your vent is the best way to reduce overheating and fires.

How To Prevent Dryer Fires (I copied this from UL)

  • Clean the lint filter before or after each load. Do not forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can be trapped.
  • The interior of the dryer and venting system should be cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel. If you notice the drying time is longer, clean the vent system thoroughly to ensure proper airflow.
  • Replace plastic or vinyl exhaust hoses with rigid or flexible metal venting.
  • Do not dry clothing or fabric upon which there is anything flammable (e.g. alcohol, cooking oils, gasoline, spot removers, dry-cleaning solvents). Flammable substances give off vapors that could ignite or explode.
  • Read manufacturers' warnings in use and care manuals that accompany new dryers. Also, make sure to read the warning markings that can usually be found on the inside of the dryer's lid.

Blomberg Laundry

Blomberg is not completely foreign to us. We sell their refrigeration, and they have a full array of other appliances. Blomberg is manufactured in Turkey. Many appliances, like Bosch, are actually now produced in that country.

Presently, there are not many choices in compact laundry with Bosch's departure. GE and Whirlpool are manufactured by other companies and may or may not comply with the new regulations. Miele and Asko are both way more expensive. If you have a small space, Blomberg is a decent alternative.

Hopefully, we will be able to fix it.

A few review sites have placed this at the bottom of their articles. So here is our take: Our mission is to find reliable products for you to buy. Other review sites may say this as well.

However, we don’t love every product. Quite frankly, it costs us way too much money in repair costs to support less reliable brands.

In fact, we sell fewer brands than most appliance stores. Here is why:

We feel it is our responsibility to repair your appliances after you buy them.

We now have 30 service technicians, each averaging 8-10 calls a day Monday through Friday, plus another 110 on Saturday. That's over 30,000 service calls logged in one year.

The labor rates of fixing an appliance do not come close to the true cost in any product’s warranty period.

That is why no major retailer has a service department. It costs too much labor, money and time.

Our Blog is a bit different than most others you will read. We cannot write glowing reviews of unreliable products.

Hopefully, the bloggers and organizations who write such glowing product reviews for every brand consider servicing these products first. Only then they will understand the consequences of their marketing.
