New Webinar: Appliance Trends to Follow and Avoid at All Cost
Share:
I have been blogging about appliances and lighting since 2007, and the two industries are so different. Wolf, Sub-Zero and Thermador are all good and somewhat similar in their operation. In lighting, however, there is bad, decent and better. It's hard to determine as a consumer, because there are no noticeable brand names. For wrought iron, Hubbardton Forge is the high quality manufacturer.

Hubbardton Forge is one of the very few lighting brands made in the USA. They are designed and manufactured in the state of Vermont. Founded in 1974, it is now one of the most respected brands in the lighting industry. Hubbardton Forge is known for its hand-forged products. All fixtures are hand forged from raw metal and wrought iron. This brand allows you the option to customize most of their products by choosing any of their metal finishes and any glass/shade colors. Their fixtures are contemporary, transitional and traditional.
Almost all other lighting companies import from China. The price is probably 10% less, but the quality of finish is not as good. You also cannot customize different finishes and glasses on boxed imports and the designs are more staid and basic.

Why is wrought iron important?
Wrought iron lighting fixtures can last for years compared to cast aluminum or other materials. I would recommend using wrought iron fixtures if you live near the ocean where salt air can damage fixtures much faster. Hubbardton Forge for instance tests their fixtures, especially outdoor fixtures, to make sure they hold up in any type of weather. Wrought iron is also natural versus other materials that have chemicals sprayed on them to make the fixture last longer than normal.
Stylistically, wrought iron has long surpassed polished and antique brass as the finish of choice in traditional and transitional homes. Some of the newer styles can be placed in contemporary settings. This is a good choice for a different type of look in your home.
Below is the process in making their hand forged wrought iron fixtures from beginning to end with a quick video of their construction process.
A designer will design and make a sketch of the fixture
The engineer starts off by cutting raw metal into appropriate sizes
The raw metal is then soldered together by hand depending on the design of the fixture
The metal is then put into a forge that gets as hot as 1,000 degrees to soften the steel
After the forging process the metal is put on a twisting machine and bent into different shapes
The steel is then put into a bead blasting (tiny beads) to clean the metal
After bead blasting, the metal is put into a vibrating machine with ceramic stones that polishes the metal for a smooth finish
The metal tubing is then welded together to make the designed fixture
The fixture is then sprayed with a powder coating and put into an oven where heat cures and bonds the powder coating for a stronger finish
The fixture that was designed by an artist is now hand crafted and ready to go
Sounds easy but you have to see it to believe it. It’s a long process and hard work. When it is finished, they have created some of the best quality lighting in the world. Once again, the best part about Hubbardton Forge is the ability to customize, so you have a unique product for your home.
