Blomberg vs. Miele Compact Laundry (Reviews/Rating/Prices)

by Rick Medeiros

Compact laundry generally refers to 24 inch washers and dryers. This size is convenient for stacking in closets or placing side by side in a standard 24 inch kitchen cabinet.

Almost all compact laundry is built and/or engineered in Europe. Europeans typically have smaller kitchens and living spaces, so compact laundry is a staple. Since these machines are only available in electric models, gas hook-up is not an option.

The Best 24 Inch Gas Ranges (Reviews/Ratings)

by Steve Sheinkopf

30 years ago when I started at Yale, you would be hard pressed to find a decent looking smaller range. They were nonexistent. Today, however, there are plenty of choices.

Appliances follow cabinet sizes. For example, dishwashers are either manufactured to fit a 24" or 18" cabinet. In refrigerators, it is 30", 33" and 36" widths as the most popular.

For ranges, it is 20", 24", 36" and 48" with 30" width being the the most popular size by far. The 36", 48" and 60” ranges are mostly the glamour professional ranges like Wolf, Thermador or high fashion imports like Smeg or Bertazzoni.

In this article, we will look at the 24" range, the products and compare at the end.

VestFrost and Small 24 Inch Counter Depth Refrigerators

by Steve Sheinkopf

According to analytics, 300 people were inquiring about VestFrost refrigerators in the last two weeks. So my first question was: What is a VestFrost refrigerator?

VestFrost is an interesting product built with all recyclable material. They are the largest refrigerator manufacturer in Scandanavia. Their story or claim to fame is energy efficiency, green manufacturing and counter depth products. It is also not self-defrosting, so the VestFrost does not consume electricity heating the outside of the refrigerator in a defrost cycle.

Electrolux vs. Blomberg Compact Laundry (Review, Rating, Prices)

by Steve Sheinkopf

Compact laundry is defined as being able to fit in a closet or under a kitchen counter. Dimensions vary slightly, but are typically 35” tall, 24” wide and 24” in depth.

This type of laundry is becoming more popular, because you do not have to cut a hole in new construction. Ventless laundry can also be placed anywhere with power and water as well, so it can easily be relocated to an upstairs closet from the basement.

Whirlpool vs. Blomberg Heat Pump Dryers (Reviews/Ratings/Prices)

by Rick Medeiros

In the market for laundry, high efficiency washers are everywhere. High efficiency front and hybrid top loading machines use turbidity sensors to measure how dirty your clothes are and use energy and water as needed.

High efficiency washers also have higher spin speeds than ever before. They spin your clothes almost dry to avoid long dry times.

Up until the heat pump dryer was introduced, dryers were not really even rated by EnergyStar for efficiency. My recommendation before the heat pump was to buy a washer with a high spin speed.

Blomberg Laundry and New UL Fire Codes For Vented Dryers

by Steve Sheinkopf

I was walking through the showroom and saw this a Blomberg washer and dryer. Blomberg is a decent company, but I do not typically like selling off-brands at Yale. We have to service products once they're sold. Off-brands and foreign labels can be maddening for parts and technical support.

Then again, I do not have much of a choice. The new UL dryer regulations state that a fire in a dryer must be contained for 7 hours. Most companies are scrambling to comply with the new standards. The biggest player, Bosch, will not market a vented dryer effective August 2013.

Why?

Dryer fires are a real problem in this country at just over 15,500 annually, causing 10 deaths, 310 injuries and $84.4 million in damages. The problem, however, is not the machine, but the venting. Cleaning your vent is the best way to reduce overheating and fires.
