Thermador vs Miele Gas Cooktops (Reviews/Ratings/Prices)

A cooktop is an appliance that has gas-fired burners and can be built into a countertop. Gas appliances were first introduced in the late 1800’s and were designed to be more efficient and safer than the open fire pits they used for cooking meat. James Sharp of Hampton, England patented one of the first gas stoves in 1826, but it wasn’t until late in that century and the early 1900s with the growth of the Gas Pipe Network that they started having some commercial success with gas appliances. So much for history.

We have been including this section as people are usually confused about the two terms. Rangetops have controls on the front and have a grill or griddle option with higher BTU burners. Cooktops are, however, more popular and feature controls on the top.

Thermador is part of the BSH home appliance corporation, headquartering in Huntington Beach California. They are a Germany based company that began manufacturing appliances in 1932. They are the 3rd largest appliance manufacture in the world. About 95% of Thermador appliances are made in the USA.

Miele (actually pronounced Mee-luh) began manufacturing appliances in Germany in 1900. They are a family owned company and have been located in Getersloh, Germany since 1907. Miele is renowned to their attention to detail in manufacturing which leads to great quality control and the least repaired brand of appliances in the market.

This comparison of these cooktops really boils down (pun intended) to performance, clean-ability, aesthetics and reliability. The 36” gas cooktop is the most popular size and most come with five sealed burners and continuous grates (grates that interlock or line up close to each other, which enables you to slide a pot from one side of the burner to the adjoining burners safely and smoothly).

Thermador's Star burner is the best performing burner in this segment. The star shaped burner has 56 gas ports that put more heat to the pan faster than any other burner. At the same time, the 2 left burners have the exclusive extra-low simmer burners, for delicate cooking of sauces or melting of chocolates or butter.

With Miele we always start with service, they are one of the least repaired brands we sell. Miele uses a double insert burner so there is an inner flame and an outer flame. This is a nice performing burner, but the high is only 15,300 BTU vs. 18,000 on the Thermador. Both of these have front middle controls with the large burner in the middle. The advantage here goes to Thermador because it has a higher BTU burner and has a larger surface area for larger pots.

Which one is better?

They both have sealed burners, quality German engineering, flexibility in the size of flames, but the Thermador star burner design just allows for better performance and flexibility with different size pans. Thermador progressive illuminated control panel gives it that finishing touch of elegance.
