LG vs JennAir French Door Double Drawer Refrigerators

May 14th, 2013 | 2 min. read

By Steve Sheinkopf

The French door has quickly become the most popular refrigerator style, far surpassing the single door bottom freezer, the side by side, or the old stand-by, the top freezer. However, there is a new phenomenon in French door doors, the double drawer or 4-door refrigerator. We will be comparing two of the most popular, LG and Jenn-Air.

LG

LG began as a consumer electronics company under the GoldStar name in 1958. After acquiring companies like Zenith and partnering with Phillips, they are now one of the largest consumer electronic manufacturers in the world. They are very stylish with their focus mainly on laundry and refrigeration.

Jenn-Air

Jenn-Air was founded in Indiana in the 50’s and became one of the more well known name in higher-end appliances. After some stuggles the brand was purchased by Whirlpool corporation, and has made a quite impressive turnaround mostly through aggressive rebates and packages.

Refrigerator Models

LG makes 4 models with a double drawer, and Jenn-Air only one. Let's take a look at how each manufacturer approaches this increasingly popular design.

LG offers this configuration in 4 different models, from the counter depth LSMX211 at 20.5 cubic feet, to the enormous LMX31985, listed at 31 cubic feet. All of these will feature external ice and water, adjustable  glass shelves, bright led lighting, and digital controls. All are available in stainless, and the LMX25988 in black and white also. The LG units will differ from the Jenn-Air, as the two drawers are part of the freezer, not the refrigerator.

Jenn-Air markets one model, the LFX2597AEM. This is full depth, stainless steel only. The Jenn-Air also offers an external ice and water dispenser, adjustable glass shelves, LED lighting, and digital controls. The biggest difference is that the upper drawer on the Jenn-Air is a refrigerator, compared to a freezer on the LG.

Summary

Why choose one over the other? The LG products will give you more choices in capacity (20.5, 24.7, 27.5, and 30.5) cubic feet. They also offer that one model in black and white. Some consumers will find that the upper freezer drawer helps them to be more organized, with the most used items more easily accessible.

The Jenn-Air, by having that upper drawer being part of the refrigerator, will appeal to those customers using more fresh ingredients especially fruit, veggies and deli meats (yogurts, perhaps for the kids).

The other factor is service. LG is one of our most serviced brands at 48% service over 5 years. Jenn-Air is less than half at about 21%.

So remember when considering any of these refrigerators, the LG will give you color and capacity options, and a more organized freezer. The Jenn-Air will be more reliable with more fresh food storage. Decide which of these factors is most important to you before making a purchase.
