Whirlpool Gold vs GE Profile Double Oven Gas Ranges: Which Is Better?

Whirlpool and GE are the top two appliance manufacturers in the United States. Whirlpool Gold and GE Profile are their best freestanding gas ranges.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool Corporation is the largest manufacturer and marketer of home appliances in the world. Whirlpool owns brands such as KitchenAid, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana and others that are marketed around the globe. When Whirlpool acquired Maytag Corporation, they became the largest manufacturer and marketer of appliances in the world, beating out Electrolux. This gave Whirlpool dominance in the U.S major appliance market. Almost 50% of all appliances shipped in these categories include dishwashers, washers & dryers, ranges, and freezers.

General Electric

General Electric, also known as GE, is a multinational conglomerate corporation which is the 6th largest company in the world. GE is divided into four segments; Energy, Finance & Consumer, Technology Infrastructure, and Industrial. The appliance division seems to be a small part of their overall business. GE ranks second in having almost 25% of the major appliance market. They are especially strong in ranges and refrigeration selling more in the U.S market than anyone else.

  • Precise Clean with 6th Sense Technology – Determines how often you use your oven and sets the correct cycle time to get the best cleaning option
  • Time Savor (lower oven only) – The convection fan circulates the hot air to seal juices and flavors. It also browns your food
  • AccuBake with 6th Sense Technology – Takes the guesswork out of baking. The 6th sense monitors the oven temperature and controls the different cooking elements to give you consistent baking on multiple racks
  • Oven Hold Warm – Keeps the oven at a low temperature so the food will stay warm while you are cooking the rest of your meal
  • 5th Burner – An oval shaped burner that will accommodate longer pots or pans

GE Profile
PGB995SETSS $2099

  • Largest double oven range in the industry
  • Center Oval Burner – Comes with a griddle/grill so you can make pancakes and sausages for breakfast. Turn the griddle over and you have a grill to make hamburgers and steaks
  • Gas Convection (Lower Oven) – Circulates heat around the food to get better cooking results at a lower temperature and less time
  • Auto Recipe Conversion – Automatically reduces the normal time and temperature of your recipe by 25 degrees. Uses convection to circulate heat around the oven. When using regular bake the food is only cooking from the heating elements and not the convection.
  • True Temp System – Gives you consistent oven temperature. There is a platinum tipped sensor inside the oven that will monitor and maintain oven temperature. If the sensor detects sudden heat reduction, it responds back with extra power to get the temp back up.

Which Range is better?

The Whirlpool range has a lot of unique features with 6th sense technology that cooks your food faster while using less energy. It is equipped with a more economical way of self-cleaning which keeps track of how often you use the oven. It also has the 5th oval burner that allows different size pans.

The GE range has the 5th burner as well, however, it comes with the griddle/grill to give you more ways to use the oven top. The convection system in the lower oven helps you convert your normal recipes into a convection mode which cooks your food faster at a lower temperature.

Both ranges have some nice features and work well. The difference that sets these 2 brands apart is service. The Whirlpool range is well made with little service. In fact, Whirlpool was listed as one of our least serviced appliance brands.

GE is a great company, but appliances are a relatively small part of their portfolio and focus. Appliances are Whirlpool's only industry and primary focus. I just think they are a bit better after the sale.
