The Massachusetts Energy Efficient Appliance Program

The state department of energy is sponsoring a 2 million dollar refrigerator and air conditioner rebate program starting July 28th. It is a buy-back program designed to remove inefficient refrigerators and ACs. There are $150 rebates for refrigerators and $50 for air conditioners.

The rules are as follows:

  1. You have to purchase an EnergyStar refrigerator and/or air conditioner from a qualifying dealer
  2. You then have to go online at MassEnergyRebates.com to acquire your rebate form. You can also call the program hotline at 1-877-574-1128.
  3. This is an exchange program, so the old, inefficient refrigerator must be removed on delivery. For ACs, you must bring the old unit to the store for the exchange
  4. The refrigerator and/or air conditioner has to be purchased first. Delivery can be scheduled at any time
  5. Unit has to be bought in store and not online
  6. The replacement must be an EnergyStar rated air conditioner or EnergyStar rated refrigerator above 7.75 cubic feet.

$150 is a good rebate, but we will be doubling that rebate on certain selected refrigerators.

We have analyzed the best refrigerator rebates by type: french door, side by side or top and bottom mount. Click on the description for the individual list of products.

Examples:

French Door Refrigerators - JennAir JFC2089VEM $1249.99 after $150 Mass Energy Rebate, $150 in instant and $450 in mail in rebates

Steve, where is the $450 rebate coming from on the JennAir counter depth? I only see $200 on the product page. It wouldn't qualify for an installation rebate, would it?

Hi Steve,
I just received delivery on my new Liebherr refrigerator (7/23), great service, great delivery - many thanks! Will my purchase qualify for the new state rebate or only on purchases made on/after 7/28?

Are there requirements for the refrigerator you're replacing? Ours is technically energy-star compliant, but the compressor is not in good shape and as a result we have to keep it turned all the way to max all the time in order to keep it at 40 degrees in the fridge... does the energy star disqualify it from being a trade-in under this program?

Will there be rebates on the Summit counter-depths? I want the one that looks like a bullet (79" high).

I too would like to know the definition of an old inefficient refrigerator. Second question, are side by side refrigerators without icemakers available?
